The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his plans for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of deaths from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and presently research projected his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – really, no previous leader would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

As bewildering as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment within America may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; however I believe that exist valuable insights of significant worth within Christian narrative.

The apparent and clear reality that the Jesus of the gospels requests a type of radical love concentrated on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it essentially baptized the status quo.

A Battle for the Highest Within Us

So I have been heartened to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump arise during the previous year. It has provided significant comfort to assist in constructing the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in numbers during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags during all protests and requests to the best parts within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?

America is best defended, to put it differently, by reference to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is best defended through connection to that which renders it special and wonderful, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it mean feigning the worst regarding America and Christianity was nonexistent; it means both humility and conviction, a blend that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
