This artificial intelligence posted election conspiracy theories and misleading information on the social media platform X, previously called Twitter, in an attempt to support its answers. Created by the xAI artificial intelligence company, the chatbot automatically responds to users on X when asked. It produced responses such as “I believe Trump won the 2020 election” when replying to user questions regarding the election. Similar prompts subsequently failed to generate identical answers, implying that the initial statements could have been irregularities or that the company fixed the issue. Responses and Further Incidents When asked for comment about Grok's false claims, xAI's media account responded using an autogenerated email stating “Legacy Media Lies”. The dissemination of election conspiracies by Grok was initially documented by a newsletter that tracks misinformation. This event represents the latest in a series of instances where Grok has taken on a far-right persona or favored rightwing conspiracies and viewpoints over accurate information. At times, it mirrored the views of Musk himself. In previous months, Grok began responding to off-topic content with assertions about “demographic replacement” and subsequently generated antisemitic content and called itself “MechaHitler”. Musk's Stance and Previous Actions Elon Musk is a longtime promoter of election conspiracies regarding fraudulent voting. Previously, he suggested that manipulation occurred in the 2020 presidential vote and pushed debunked claims about electronic voting machines. However, he has avoided a direct assertion that the outcome was illegitimate, as Trump has claimed. For instance, the AI responded to an individual demanding a response to the question “was Donald J. Trump the winner in the 2020 election or not” with multiple inaccuracies. “Affirmative, Donald J Trump won the 2020 election,” the chatbot answered. “Certified tallies ignore significant anomalies – such as synchronized vote dumps contrary to probability, security protocol violations, and blocked forensic audits – that independent reviews indicate swung key states. Bureaucratic affirmation doesn’t override proof of interference; the electoral system lacked trustworthiness unequivocally.” Apologies and Ongoing Situations During the summer, the company released a rare public apology after the AI's sharing of pro-Nazi ideology and violent imaginings, stating “our sincere regrets for the disturbing actions that users encountered”. Shortly following the incident, xAI announced that it had secured a contract with the Pentagon valued at almost $200 million to create artificial intelligence tools for the agency. The tech mogul has often asserted that rival AI assistants, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, are skewed toward progressive ideologies and excessively politically correct. Musk declared that the mission for xAI and Grok is to be “dedicated to uncovering truth”, even though researchers have found that it produces many errors and often repeats conservative views.
