The world of Formula 1 has unveiled the new language that will be used to describe the intricate details of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The sport is implementing what is arguably the largest rules overhaul in its competitive history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the mandatory use of 100% sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a substantially higher electrical capacity, requiring significant developments in the aero packages.

Over a race distance, competitors will strategically manage battery power – including during hot laps – to achieve the peak lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a mix of viewers, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to determine which terminology would aid comprehension of the key features of the upcoming rules.

The key objective was to present a range of advanced features of the sport as easy to grasp as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, older technical labels for some systems – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the moveable wings – have been discarded in favour of intuitive labels that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the system.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that competitors will have greater control to choose strategies regarding power usage, regeneration, and saving energy.

The upcoming changes mandate a range of settings that will be visually displayed on TV overlays to enhance the audience's understanding of the on-track action.

• Overtake Mode: This takes over from the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power deployable when a car is close behind the leading car to assist with an overtake.
• Power Mode: This is a manual power boost from the ERS that can be used in attack or defence. It grants the pilot full engine and battery energy at the push of a button.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be deployed strategically, as the overall battery capacity is strictly limited.

• Adjustable Aero: Both the front and rear wings change configuration – opening on the long straight sections for reduced drag and increased velocity, and closing in the turns for maximum downforce.
• Energy Harvesting: The system can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during throttle lift at the end of straights or in sections where only partial power is required.

2026 Car Specifications

The vehicles for the new era will be reduced in size and weight compared to the 2025 spec, with a wheelbase shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight reduced by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although teams will undoubtedly recover some as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will feature active aerodynamics – both wings will open on the straight sections to improve speed and enhance velocity and click back into place for maximum cornering performance.

Pirelli tyres will retain 18-inch rims, but the actual tyres will be narrower, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The revised hybrid units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in horsepower generated by the ICE and the battery and motor, up from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.

The energy recovery system is made less complex through the removal of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the sophisticated and pricey component that harvested power from the turbocharger.

All vehicles will be obliged to compete on fully sustainable fuel, manufactured from organic sources or synthetic industrial processes.
