My Hero Academia Cast Members Look Back on an Emotional Final Season: 'I’m Something of a Emotional Wreck'

The beloved anime series My Hero Academia has reached its conclusion, leaving fans with a deep feeling of emotion that goes deeper than the story itself. This heroic tale has always been greater than a straightforward plot; it's a rite-of-passage story about hope, resilience, and the true meaning of heroism in a world full of trials. The final season pushes these central ideas to their breaking point, as Class 1-A faces the aftermath of the villainous uprising and a world teetering on the brink of collapse.

For a generation of viewers, the series, which debuted in 2015, was their gateway to anime. From its hype-filled start to its poignant finale, it defined the genre for nearly a decade. Its end truly signifies the close of an era. If you discover you are getting misty-eyed during the series finale, know that you are in plenty of company. The English dub cast felt those exact emotions, pouring immense heart into their recordings for the last chapters.

Saying Farewell to a Pivotal Role

"It was such a wonderful thing to see this last installment bring together all these narrative strands into this huge, heartfelt release for these heroes," stated one actor. "And to be part of that, during that time, portraying the characters, is incredibly powerful."

The difficulty of the farewell isn't just about the plot. My Hero Academia became a defining chapter in the lives of its cast, and with its end comes the closing of an era they have carried with them for a long time.

"Just as a human being, for whom this has been a daily reality for the majority of ten years, even if the line I'm saying isn’t particularly emotional, if it’s just Ida being himself, every time I finish a session, I’m kind of a blubbering wreck because it's ending. I am unprepared," admitted another veteran voice actor.

Unexpected Tears from the Final Battles

Despite voicing their own signature characters, several actors still have personal favorite characters beyond their roles, figures whose story arcs hit them just as hard on an emotional level.

"What that’s taken me aback so far in my viewing of the final season is how many characters are bringing me to tears," noted one actor. "Be it the Symbol of Peace's battle at the very beginning of this season, the Erasure Hero, [even] the Shining Hero drew a tear this season!"

The actors behind the brotherly dynamic of Shoto and Dabi were also caught up in the tragedy of their complicated dynamic, especially during the brothers’ confrontations across the recent seasons.

A Powerful Moment

"Recently, a castmate delivered a line as his character that, really, if you heard it alone, it’s a simple line, it shouldn't affect anyone, but he poses a question to his sibling a question, and the way it was performed was so real and poignant," remembered one actor. "It inspired the read I gave. I love my castmates, they’re so good at this, and I can’t express enough that I’m so fortunate."

Another actor agreed wholeheartedly, clarifying that the apparently minor question originates from a brief, funny scene introduced earlier, one that is completed in the finale and lands with devastating emotional weight.

"Jump ahead to the final season, when they’re visiting, and [the character] says, 'Wait, I need more time'," the actor explained. "Yeah, it was just a way to try to reach out. It was just a question, but in context, it's everything. It's love, understanding, remorse..."

"... and penitence," finished the other, voice thick with emotion. "Those boys should’ve been able to talk like that."
