A Denmark-based citizen has been found guilty of sharing nude segments from protected movies and TV series on the social media platform Reddit.

According to a police report obtained by BBC News, the anonymous man shared 347 clips of explicit content in a subreddit he managed, which were then watched 4.2 million times.

Danish authorities confirm he has been handed a seven-month deferred sentence for violating copyright laws.

Legal analysts explain the man was charged under a seldom-invoked provision in Danish copyright law, with the judge ruling that by taking the scenes out of their original context, the accused had harmed the artists' "ethical entitlements".

He has additionally been convicted of distributing more than 25 terabytes of copyrighted digital content.

From spring 2022 to mid-2023, the user known as "KlammereFyr" on Reddit posted adult scenes including over 100 actresses.

He shared them in the subreddit he was a moderator of.

According to the Denmark's copyright protection organization the Rights Alliance, his online community had more than 6,000 subscribers and users were prompted to request excerpts of particular performers.

In last year, campaigners filed the case to the authorities on behalf of the impacted actors, filmmakers and producers, which led to the subreddit being shut down.

One actress, among the performers whose explicit content were circulated in the community, told Danish media at the period she felt there was a distinction between appearing naked in a movie and being shown on Reddit.

The actress stated the uploads amounted to "abuse".

'An important message'

The man was arrested in September 2024 and admitted culpable to the allegations last month.

In a statement after the verdict, TRA head the organization's leader remarked the decision sent an "significant" message "indicating violations of creators' entitlements has consequences".

The ruling is viewed as unique in Denmark for its application of the "moral rights" section of the national copyright law, which states an artist's work cannot be used in a way which infringes upon their standing.

Intellectual property expert a legal scholar informed BBC News the case was "rare" for its emphasis on the damage to the integrity of an artist, rather than to them economically.

How the case could influence other countries is uncertain.

But she added there may be "an increasing number of such cases" in the coming years with the advancement of AI, where "the sanctity of an individual's creative output might be compromised with greater ease".
